The Halide Project is thrilled to announce that, after a thoughtful search, we’ve found the perfect space to open our community darkroom. Located in the growing arts neighborhood of South Kensington in Philadelphia, the 2500 sq ft suite of rooms on the ground floor of the Putnam Building will be home to The Halide Project’s own office, gallery, classroom, photo book collection, photographic equipment lending library, and a well-maintained, professional grade darkroom for traditional printing, film development, and alternative processes.Learn More
The Halide Project was founded in 2015 to foster the continued practice and appreciation of traditional and alternative process photography. In an increasingly virtual age, practitioners of the analog arts value the immersive, tactile process and the unique quality of a handcrafted, one-of-a-kind print. We strive to support and further connect this community. Our network of friends and followers is in the hundreds and growing. A 501(c)(3) non-profit run by a volunteer board of directors, THP has successfully served its mission through special exhibitions, artist-led workshops, public events, and online resources—all along with the dream of ultimately opening a new community darkroom in Philadelphia.
It’s happening. We’ve signed the lease and we’ve started moving in. All that’s needed in order to proceed is the necessary funding for the initial build-out. We have a team ready to install plumbing, ventilation, sinks, enlarger stations, drying racks, and more. And while we have gratefully received truckloads of donated equipment, there is still some gear to get to ensure a fully stocked, well-functioning darkroom.
We have the passion, the people, and the plan. With the support of the community, we can open this new darkroom, showcase even more contemporary photographic works, continue to present educational public programming, and nurture an environment where artists can connect and exchange ideas for years to come.
Please join us in creating this space by making a tax-deductable contribution of any amount, or choose from the listed perks including membership, original artwork, and more! Our campaign continues through December 31st. If you would like to support in other ways, we welcome the gift of your time, darkroom supplies, photographic equipment, and photo books.
