Intro to B&W film processing

In this workshop we will be learning the fundamentals of B&W film processing. We will cover how to mix chemistry, load film, and process a roll of film. Working in the darkroom is both a technical and artistic challenge, and this workshop will give you the opportunity to explore both as a part of your photographic practice.

In addition to bringing an exposed roll of film Ilford HP5+ (either 35mm or 120), students should also bring a binder to carry their sleeved negatives home in. I recommend the Print File Black Safe-T-Binder. Negative sleeves are provided, but students are welcome to bring their own if they have them.

The Halide Project will provide all necessary chemistry.

Instructor bio:
Aaron M. Cohen is a photographer and educator based in Philadelphia. He began volunteering at The Halide Project in 2019. His photography has been featured online on sites such as CNN, Vice, and LaRepubblica. as well as in publications such as Time Out New York, The Sun Magazine, and GEO. Most recently, photos from his project “The Communitarians” were featured in the exhibition "A Section of Now" at the Canadian Centre for Architecture in Montreal. In 2021, he founded The Parallax Review (@parallaxreview), an online site dedicated to critical writing on photography.
