Intro to Film Photography
In this class students will learn the magic of film photography! This course is designed for a first time manual 35mm SLR camera user. During the workshop students will become familiar with SLR camera parts, learn the manual settings of a 35mm film camera, shoot a roll of film, then develop it with chemistry. By the end of the course, everyone will be familiar with all the basics of film photography.
Syllabus:
(5 min) Start with Introductions
(30-40 min) Hands on Camera Intro - students will be prompted to explore the parts of the camera and learn about the mechanics of shutter, aperture, and various camera parts
(60-80 min) Deep dive into Shutter, Aperture, ISO, and balancing a light meter. Teacher will use a slideshow to assist in learning, and students will practice balancing the light meter with teacher prompting.
(10 min) Learn how to load film and students load their cameras with film under teacher supervision.
(60 min) Shoot a roll of film outside, with assistance from teacher as needed
(10 min) Learn how to rewind film and students rewind theirs under teacher supervision.

(20 min) Teacher demo on developing film
(60 min) Students reel and tank then develop their rolls of film
(15 min) Cut and Sleeve, Look at photos at light table with loupes
End workshop with Q+A
The Halide Project will supply all necessary film and chemistry. 35mm cameras are available for a week long rental.
Instructor Bio:
Heather Palecek is an analogue photographer working in the mediums of pinhole photography, lumen printing, cyanotype, and mixed media cameraless photography. She uses these historical photography processes in experimental ways to collaborate with mother nature in her work. She has been working around the theme of relationships and connection for much of her artistic career; Many of her artistic pursuits explore the relationships humans have to mother nature and their impact on the environment. It is her goal as an artist to create artwork that makes people think about their own relationship with mother nature and inspire them to be more mindful.
Palecek has a degree in fine art education and photography from Montclair State University and has been a high school photography teacher in NJ since 2010. She teaches immersive workshops on alternative and historic photography processes and is the leader of the NJ Pinhole Club. Her award winning work has been exhibited locally and internationally.
