Surrealism uses experimental artistic approaches to create dreamlike images and aims to capture unconscious ideas and emotions by manipulating reality. In this three-session class, Cara will review the Surrealist movement within photography, including its origins, influences, and some of its photographers. While the first week will consist mainly of lecture, Cara will discuss with students their project ideas that will aim to create a body of work that encompasses the ideas of surrealist photography. They can utilize styles from one of the photographers discussed or another of their choosing. A few short videos will be assigned to watch between classes so that students can broaden their understanding of this movement, and further discussions will be had at the beginning of the following class. Week 2 will be a presentation of photos made by the students up to that point, which will be shared with the group to discuss their approach thus far. Week 3 will be a final presentation and discussion of the images.
Students are expected to have access to the necessary equipment and facilities to make their images and prints. Those in the Philadelphia area can request Halide darkroom access in conjunction with the class. An orientation session will be required for those who aren’t already Halide darkroom members.
