Light talk with Sally Chapman
Sally Chapman is a photographer and ceramicist who gravitates toward tactile methods of printing in her photographic work. In her current series Mythic Nature – on view at The Halide Project through May 29th – she creates imaginary worlds in her pieces by decoupling statuary from their stark plinths and recontexualizing them within landscapes created from formal gardens, farmlands, and watery hideaways. She then prints the resulting digital negatives in cyanotype and further adds her hand to the final works by drawing and hand-coloring them with pastels. Sally was chosen by guest juror, Paula Tognarelli, as the Grand Prize Winner in Halide’s Living Image 2022 exhibition, so Mythic Nature became the cornerstone of our 2023 Spring Invitational, Constructing Mythologies, which also includes work by Sandra C. Davis and Tricia Rosenkilde.
A Q&A will follow her presentation.
